About Shizen Studio
Our Mission
Welcome to Shizen Studio!
We are engaged in exploring how architecture, nature, culture, and psychology can contribute to a more peaceful and fulfilling future.
Focusing on sustainable architecture, thoughtful technology, and human well-being, we share architectural works, art, research, and ideas centered on harmony with nature and care for people.
Through Shizen Studio, we hope to inspire others to consider how the environments we create can support happiness, belonging, and a deeper connection to the natural world.
Our Story
Shizen Studio was established by Raku and Heidi Yamazaki, who share a common dream and vision.
Raku is an aspiring architect who seeks to preserve culture and history while thoughtfully integrating modernity and new technology. His work values human well-being, coexistence with nature, and architecture that responds to the culture, climate, and character of each place.
Heidi is a psychology student passionate about human well-being, lifespan development, and the psychological effects of our surroundings. She is interested in how natural and built environments can support self-actualization, inner peace, and a more harmonious relationship with the Earth.
We spent our student years in the United States, where we often encountered the effects of rapid development, social inequality, constant noise, and excessive consumption. In search of tranquility, culture, and a closer relationship with nature, our hearts guided us to places including Singapore, London, Germany, and Switzerland.
Through these experiences, we witnessed how architecture can bring culture, modernity, technology, and nature together in ways that nurture people’s sense of happiness and belonging. We came to believe that progress does not need to erase history or separate people from nature. Instead, the future can be built upon cultural memory, environmental responsibility, and the qualities that connect us to something larger than ourselves.

What Shizen is About
The Japanese word “Shizen” translates to “Nature” in English, but in Japanese, it carries multiple meanings:
1. A place where plants and animals reside.
2. The natural state or course of things, untouched by human intervention.
Through architectural projects, artwork, psychological research, personal experiences, and visions for the future, Shizen Studio explores how we might move away from excessive mass production and development toward a society that values craftsmanship, history, community, and the natural world.
We believe that creating a truly peaceful future requires collaboration across many fields. By bringing together our perspectives in architecture and psychology, we hope to envision environments in which people can live comfortably, meaningfully, and peacefully in harmony with one another and the Earth. It is with this sentiment we decided on the name “Shizen Studio.”
